From Shiffer-Sebba:
“The household has been the dominant unit of measurement in the social sciences due to data availability and conceptual convenience. This project uses newly available Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) data to instead explore the role of multi-generational extended families – or “clans” – in intergenerational stratification. Specifically, we ask whether clans predict their descendants’ educational attainment above and beyond parents and grandparents. The project demonstrates the importance of broadening the analytic lens to comprehensive family units, which better correspond to how the term “family” is used colloquially.”
